Beyond the Book: The Art of Hollering

Holler is such an interesting word.  It can be both a noun - names a person, place thing or idea - or a verb - shows action or a state of being.  In the later part of the nineteenth century holler, as a noun, could refer to a style of gospel singing. Eva's hollering is definitely NOT singing!  Before that, in the seventeenth century, holler as a verb was a variant of hollo  meaning to shout especially to call the hounds in hunting.  In other words, to holler was a form of hello and intended to be attention getting.  When Eva hollers she is saying pay attention to me!

In the United States there is an annual hollerin' contest in North Carolina.  Read more about it here.  At this contest they have different kinds of hollers:  distress, functional, communicative and expressive. Click here to hear examples of hollerin'.

Eva is just a toddler. When she hollers she wants attention. When she gets attention she is happy. She doesn't know a lot of words yet, but I bet you do.  What words do you use when you want attention? What words do you use when you're happy? Do you say them loudly?

Describe some of the things Eva likes to do.  What kinds of things do you like to do?   Do you do your favorite things with other people or by yourself?  If Eva visited you, where could you go to do her favorite things?

Can you draw a self-portrait of you hollering?  Post it to our Facebook page found here.
