Beyond the Book: The Art of Soothing a Hollering Child

There is absolutely nothing soothing about a crying baby or toddler!  New parents and new grandparents can be anxious and worried about the crying and they want to do everything they can to make it stop!  Babies cry for all sorts of reasons. Because they cannot yet talk, they only cry. They might be hungry, wet, need a burp, or just a calm voice or gentle touch.  Most parents and grandparents will make sure the baby has a dry diaper and is fed and burped.  Other ways to soothe a crying child are to swaddle, snuggle them in a carrier close to you, rock them, sing a song or even give them a gentle massage.

A crying toddler is quite different!  Some suggestions for  soothing a crying toddler are to give them choices, keep them busy, play, or even offer them a nap!  Click here to read an interesting article from Scholastic Magazine - Ages & Stages: How to Calm and Comfort Children 0-8.

2011 marked the 65th anniversary of the publication of one of the most revolutionary books in American history, Dr. Spock's Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care released in 1946 just in time for the baby boom era. In celebration, Parenting Magazine listed five core ideas from the book that helped define America's view of parenthood:  Trust your instincts; routines are nice, but babies don't need a strict regimen; don't fret if your baby acts funny, it can probably be easily explained; ideas about good parenting should evolve; and, finally, babies need love.  Today, one of the more popular books on baby care is Moms on Call Basic Baby Care which even has an app. subscription service and website.

When Eva hollers she is kept busy exploring, interacting with others, eating, playing outdoors, bathing,  and finally, sleeping!  What do you do to calm a crying child?  If you have photos please post to our Facebook or Instagram pages!
